Captain Margo Vishnevska has become a Ukrainian war hero known as much for her battlefield bravery as for her uncanny ability to identify edible mushrooms at 50 paces. Before the war, she was a mild-mannered mycologist who insisted that fungi held the key to both world peace and a perfect borscht. When conflict erupted, Margo repurposed her foraging skills to outwit enemy patrols, often leading her unit through forests while lecturing them on the reproductive habits of chanterelles. Her comrades claimed she could find cover in any terrain—“probably because she thought like a mushroom,” they joked. She has since founded the Spores of Freedom Foundation, dedicated to veteran rehabilitation and proper mushroom identification. Her wartime memoir, From Trenches to Truffles, aims to be the only one of its kind with a recipe section.
